Midwest Clay Project offers a fully functioning ceramics studio with worktables, 9 electric wheels, one kick-wheel, a slab roller, and an extruder. We provide a studio stoneware clay body and a rich palette of cone 6 oxidation glazes through our Materials Account program.
There are three basic options for using our studio space, Monthly Membership [$85/mo], Adult Drop-In [$20/day subject to below schedule], or a Private Lesson [$50/lesson, see bottom of page]. In each case, Materials Account Credits are purchased independently from studio time – this enables one to replenish time or materials as needed.
If you are new to MCP or have only basic knowledge of the ceramic process, you will need to take one of our 6-week classes OR a series of Private Lessons prior to using the studio independently. You will learn about studio procedures as well as how to make a piece from start (a lump of clay) to finish (glazed piece), thereby enabling you to have greater success with independent studio time while also protecting the studio’s kilns and equipment.
Individuals who wish to use the studio independently must demonstrate prerequisite clay experience or have taken at least one class at Midwest Clay Project. Open Studio time is non-instructional. If you would like to meet with the studio manager, Brian Kluge, to discuss using the studio, please email or call to set up an appointment.
ADULT OPEN STUDIO DROP-IN HOURS:
Monday 1pm – 5pm
Wednesday 1pm – 5pm
Friday 1pm – 9pm

*** No Open Studio – May 26 ***
We do our very best to stick to the schedule above and we do update the website with unavailable dates. However, it is worth noting that we have an extremely small staff and other tasks occasionally take us off-site. Consider emailing or calling ahead to verify Open Studio availability if you are traveling a great distance to the studio.
Monthly Members have near 24/7 access.
ADULT Private Lesson: (75 minutes) $50/person or $40/person for groups of 2-4
In-depth, hands-on instruction! Truly the best way to get started & to become oriented with the studio. Handbuilding or wheel throwing instruction with one finished piece included. Additional pieces may be kept at $5/object (minimum). Appointment required. Ask for more details. Members pay a discounted rate on Private Lessons, but materials are not included.
