Midwest Clay Project offers a fully functioning ceramics studio with worktables, 15 electric wheels, a slab roller, and two extruders. We offer a number of mid-range (^6) clay bodies and a rich palette of cone 6 oxidation glazes through our Materials Account program.
There are three basic options for using our studio space, Monthly Membership [$85/mo], Adult Drop-In [$20/day subject to below schedule], or a Private Lesson [$50/lesson, see bottom of page]. In each case, Materials Account Credits are purchased independently from studio time – this enables one to replenish time or materials as needed.
Interested in Membership? If you are new to MCP or have limited knowledge of the ceramic process, you will need to take one of our 6-week classes OR a series of Private Lessons (with reference check) prior to being granted membership access. You will learn about our studio procedures as well as how to make a pot or sculpture from start (a lump of clay) to finish (glazed piece), thereby enabling you to have greater success with independent studio time while also protecting the studio’s kilns and equipment.
*Exceptions to the aforementioned membership requirements can be made for those with degrees in ceramics or equivalent experience. If you would like to meet to discuss membership, please email Brian Kluge to set up an appointment.
Drop-In Open Studio time is non-instructional and is offered at the times scheduled below. If you have not taken a class at MCP or another studio and are new to clay, we strongly recommend a private lesson (scroll down) prior to doing a Drop-In visit.
ADULT OPEN STUDIO DROP-IN HOURS:
M 1pm – 5pm
T 1pm – 5pm
W 1pm – 5pm
F 1pm – 5pm
*** NO OPEN STUDIO Feb. 19 & Feb. 24-29 ***
We do our very best to stick to the schedule above and we do update the website with unavailable dates. However, it is worth noting that we have an extremely small staff and other tasks occasionally take us off-site. Consider emailing or calling ahead to verify Open Studio availability if you are traveling a great distance to the studio.
Monthly Members have near 24/7 access.
ADULT Private Lesson: (75 minutes) $50/person or $40/person for groups of 2-4
In-depth, hands-on instruction! Truly the best way to get started & to become familiar with the studio. Handbuilding or wheel throwing instruction with one finished piece included. Additional pieces may be kept at $5/object (minimum). Appointment required. Ask for more details. Members pay a discounted rate on Private Lessons, but one finished piece is not included.
