WHEEL 1 – This class is designed for those new to the potter’s wheel, as well as those with some experience interested in re-establishing a firm foundation for more advanced work. Our skilled instructors guide you through the entire ceramic process tailoring each lesson to suit the often diverse needs of the group. Students generally leave the class with several completed mugs and bowls. This is a fantastic opportunity to become acquainted with the MCP community. Many people enjoy taking this class several times before continuing onto other classes.
-Tuesdays 9-11am, (Sept 9 – Oct 14) w/ Nicky Ross Fee: $209. Please note: This morning class is 30 minutes shorter than our other adult classes.
-Tuesdays 6:30-9:00pm (Sept 9 – Oct 14) w/ Nicky Ross Fee: $239.
WHEEL 2 – Take your throwing skills to the next level! Designed for those with enough experience to comfortably center and throw about 2 pounds of clay, this class provides in-depth throwing demonstrations and information on handles, lids and plates. Additionally, there will be conversation about what qualifies as a ‘well made’ pot and how to approach function. We strongly suggest taking Wheel 1 at least once (or twice!) at Midwest Clay Project before taking this class.
-Thursdays 6:30-9:00pm, (Sept 11 – Oct 16) w/ Nick Toebaas Fee: $239.
HANDBUILDING: Building with Clay Off the Wheel – This class covers a variety of techniques such as coiling, slab building and pinching and provides individualized instruction for beginners as well as those with clay experience. Functional and sculptural forms will be explored. This class is ideal for those new to ceramics, as well as those with some experience looking to broaden their understanding of the material and handbuilding principles. Many experienced throwing students find this class a helpful supplement to our wheel classes. Students will benefit from ample demonstration as well as facilitated work time.
-Wednesdays 6:30-9:00pm, (Sept 10 – Oct 15) w/ Brian Kluge Fee: $239.
-Saturdays 9:00-11:00am, (Sept 10 – Oct 15) w/ Brian Kluge Fee: $209. Please note: This morning class is 30 minutes shorter than our other adult classes.
PRIVATE LESSONS – Don’t want to commit to a class this session? MCP’s Teaching Staff offer private lessons! Whether you have some experience, or are starting fresh, private lessons can be very beneficial. Lessons are tailored to your needs, interests and skill level. In general, private lessons are scheduled Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm, however, we can occasionally accommodate an evening lesson. At least one week’s notice is required to schedule all private lessons. Individual adult private lessons are $50 for 75 minutes of hands on, in-depth instruction.

FAQ’s Does my class fee include clay, glaze and firing fees? Yes – your class fee includes up to 10lbs. of finished fired work. This means that you may use as much clay as you like each time you come in to work and then you decide what you would like to keep and fire.
Can you give me a general idea of what “ten pounds of pottery” might look like? We have found most beginning students in a wheel class do not exceed ten pounds in six weeks. Ten pounds is often 8-12 pieces of finished, glazed pottery.
May I make more than 10lbs. of work? Yes – work beyond the initial ten pounds provided to students can be fired based on a per pound material fee.
May I work in the studio outside of class? Yes – during the six weeks you are registered for a class at MCP, you have unlimited studio access Tuesday-Saturday when the studio is open and there is not another adult class running. We also offer evening studio hours, which vary with each session, so please check with staff for our current schedule.
