Studio Move & 2014 Spring Classes!

For those of you who haven’t heard – Midwest Clay Project has moved! Our last day of business at 918 Williamson St. was Saturday, March 29. The first week of April has been an exciting transition into our new home at 2040 Winnebago St. We are thrilled to be joining a hub a creative activity in the Atwood neighborhood! Our new neighbors include Studio Paran, Winnebago Studios, Madison Circus Space, Door Pottery, Sector 67 as well as Big Oak Childcare.

If all continues according to our current schedule, adult members will be able to settle in on Thursday April 10th. We are excited about this transition and would like to thank our membership for their enthusiasm, support and countless volunteer hours towards the move.

In the coming weeks, please keep the following in mind….

  • As of Saturday, March 29th the Willy St. location of Midwest Clay Project is closed.
  • Current adult members will likely be able to settle into the new location at 2040 Winnebago on Thursday, April 10th.
  • Kids’ Open studio will resume on Saturday, April 12th.
  • We will not be firing regularly until after Tuesday, April 15th
  • Our phone number, email and website have not changed! You can still contact us at 608-255-9240 or We are checking our email and voicemail regularly.

2014 Spring classes will begin the last week in April at the new location!
Check out the complete line up below. As always, free free to give us a call if you have any questions. We are happy to help you determine which class is right for you based on your experience level and interests. Taking a class is absolutely the best way to join the MCP community and become acquainted with our studio schedule and procedures.  As always, class registration includes access to a well stocked community clay bin and 10lbs of finished work. In addition, registration in an adult class includes access to a generous schedule of open studio time!

While we are between locations, the best way to register is to call us: 608-255-9240.  
If there is still room in your desired class, we will take your information and instruct you to pop a check in the mail.  Durng this hectic transiton, feel free to leave a voicemail if we do not answer the phone.  We will return your call ASAP.  Please do not send a check before corresponded with staff. As always a $50 non-refundable depsit is required to guarantee your space in a class.

Adult Classes

Tuesday 6:30-9:00pm (4/29-6/3) – Teapots w/ Allison Craver
Fee: $239. / Monthly Member Fee: $215.

Join MCP’s Studio Manager for comprehensive instruction on making teapots using the potter’s wheel. The class will include extensive demonstration and cover all teapot components including body, lid, spout and handle. Additionally, we will spend time discussing design and ergonomic considerations. Best suited for the intermediate to advanced student. This is the last time Allison will teach this class before leaving Madison for graduate school. Don’t miss out! (

Wednesday 6:30-9:00pm (4/30-6/4) – Wheel 1&2 w/ Nick Toebaas
Fee: $239. / Monthly Member Fee: $215.

Learn the basics of making small cups and bowls on the potter’s wheel. This class is designed with the beginning student in mind, but can also serve as a comprehensive refresher for those with a bit of experience, or those who have been away from the potter’s wheel for some time. Students will begin with a lump of clay and end with glazed, fired pottery. No experience required – this class is an excellent introduction to our studio!(

Thursday 10:00am -12:00pm (5/1-6/5) – Decorate: Leaves and Flowers w/ Nicky Ross
Fee: $209. / Monthly Member Fee: $188.

This is an ideal class for those interested in expanding their design vocabulary! Nicky Ross of Door Pottery will demonstrate a variety of inspiring decorating techniques and tips. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn directly from the source how Door Pottery, and other studios working in the Arts & Crafts tradition, achieve their distinguished designs. Best suited for the intermediate to advanced student. (

Thursday 6:30-9:00pm (5/1-6/5) – Exploring Handbuilding w/ Brian Kluge
Fee: $239. / Monthly Member Fee: $215.

Learn a variety of fun handbuilding techniques for making both functional and sculptural forms. This is an excellent class for people new to the studio as well as those interested in building on previous experience. Demonstrations will cover a variety of construction techniques and approaches to surface. No experience required. (

Saturday 9:00-11:00am (5/3-6/7) – Wheel 2 w/ Allison Craver
Fee: $209. / Monthly Member Fee: $188.

Take your throwing skills to the next level! Designed for those with some experience, this class will provide in depth throwing demonstrations and information on handles, plates and lids. Additionally, there will be conversation about what qualifies as a ‘well made’ pot, and how to approach function. We strongly suggest taking Wheel 1 & 2 at Midwest Clay Project before taking this class.

All classes are limited to 8 students.

Teen Classes
Please note:  Kids’ classes do not include open studio time.  Kids are welcome to pay for a studio visit during scheduled Kids’ Open Studio hours, which vary from one session to the next.  Check our website.  Kid’s classes DO include 10lbs. of finished work. 

Tuesday 3:15-4:45 (4/29-6/3) – Tween Handbuilding w/ Jennifer Lapham (Ages 10-13)
Fee: $115.

Join Jennifer, MCP’s founder, for an afternoon of handbuilding! Instruction will include basic forming techniques such as coiling, pinching and building with slabs. Kids will become acquainted with studio equipment such as the slab roller and extruder, and will see work through the entire process, including surface design and glazing.

Friday 3:15-4:45 (5/2-6/6) – Teen Wheel w/ Nicky Ross (Ages 12-15)
Fee: $115.

Join MCP for a fun time on the potter’s wheel! Over the course of six weeks, students will learn how to transform a lump of clay into a fired piece of pottery. Classes will include demonstration and ample work time. This class is perfect for those with some experience as well as those who want to give it a try.
